Hanuman was born to Anjana, a female vanara, and Kesari, a male vanara who was the king of the monkeys. According to some legends, Anjana was a celestial nymph who was cursed to be born as a monkey. She prayed to Lord Shiva for a child, and he granted her wish by sending his own spark into her womb. Thus, Hanuman is considered to be an incarnation of Shiva. According to another legend, Anjana was given a sacred pudding (payasam) by the wind god Vayu, who was also Hanuman's father and guru. The pudding was originally given to King Dasharatha of Ayodhya by the fire god Agni, as a boon for having children. Dasharatha shared the pudding with his three wives, who gave birth to Rama, Lakshmana, Bharata, and Shatrughna. However, a part of the pudding fell from the sky and was caught by Vayu, who gave it to Anjana. She ate it and conceived Hanuman.

Hanuman grew up to be a powerful and mischievous monkey. He had many supernatural abilities, such as changing his size and shape, flying in the air, lifting mountains, and crossing oceans. He once mistook the sun for a ripe fruit and tried to catch it, but was hit by Indra's thunderbolt and fell down unconscious. Vayu was angry at this and withdrew his breath from the world, causing a great calamity. The gods then revived Hanuman and blessed him with more boons, such as immunity from weapons, longevity, and wisdom.

Hanuman met Rama when he was sent by his uncle Sugriva, the king of Kishkindha, to spy on him and Lakshmana. Hanuman recognized Rama as his lord and became his faithful servant. He helped Rama form an alliance with Sugriva and his army of monkeys to fight against Ravana. He also played a crucial role in finding Sita, who was abducted by Ravana and held captive in Lanka. He flew across the ocean and reached Lanka, where he searched for Sita in Ravana's palace. He found her in a grove called Ashoka Vatika and gave her Rama's ring as a token of his love. He also burned down Lanka with his flaming tail after being captured and tortured by Ravana's guards. He returned to Rama with the news of Sita's whereabouts and encouraged him to attack Lanka.

Hanuman fought bravely in the war between Rama and Ravana. He performed many heroic deeds, such as killing several demons, carrying a mountain full of medicinal herbs to heal Lakshmana's wounds, and rescuing Rama and Lakshmana from the clutches of Ahiravana, Ravana's brother who ruled the underworld. He also helped Rama defeat Ravana and free Sita from his captivity. After the war, he accompanied Rama back to Ayodhya and witnessed his coronation as the king.

Hanuman remained loyal to Rama even after his departure from the earth. He continued to serve him by chanting his name and meditating on him. He also protected his devotees from various dangers and troubles. He is believed to be immortal and present wherever Rama's name is sung or remembered.
