Back Up

You can back up content, data, and settings from your phone to your Google Account. You can restore your backed up information to the original phone or to some other Android phones. You can't use back up when you set up a personal device with a work profile or for work only, or when you set up a company-owned device.

Backups are uploaded to Google servers and they're encrypted with your Google Account password. For some data, your phone's screen lock PIN, pattern, or password is also used to encrypt your data so it can be backed up safely.

Your photos and videos are already available in Google Photos. But you can restore the rest of the data you backed up while you set up your new phone for the first time or after a factory reset. At setup, to restore your data, follow the on-screen steps.

If any Restore options are grayed out or you receive an error message, you may need to do some extra steps. One common solution is to check that your Android operating system is updated. To back up and restore your phone, it must run Android 8 or higher.

The Microsoft Authenticator app backs up your account credentials and related app settings, such as the order of your accounts, to the cloud. You can then use the app to recover your information on a new device, potentially avoiding getting locked out or having to recreate accounts.

Each backup storage location requires you to have one personal Microsoft account, and iOS requires you to also have an iCloud account. You can have multiple accounts stored in that single location. For example, you can have a personal account, a work or school account, and a personal, non-Microsoft account like for Facebook, Google, and so on.

Your backup is stored in the iCloud for iOS and in Microsoft's cloud storage provider for Android. This means that your backup is unavailable if you switch between Android and iOS devices. If you make the switch, you must manually recreate your accounts within the Authenticator app.

If you've already set up accounts in the Authenticator app, the app won't be able to recover your backed-up accounts. Preventing recovery helps ensure that your account details aren't overwritten with out-of-date information. In this situation, you must remove any existing account information from the existing accounts set up in your Authenticator app before you can recover your backup.

Now that you've backed up and recovered your account credentials to your new device, you can continue to use the Authenticator app to verify your identity. For more information, see Sign in to your accounts using the Microsoft Authenticator app.

You can use your computer as normal while the back up is in progress. If any files fail to back up, a shortcut will be created in Dropbox called Files on my computer that will take you to their location on your computer.

Keeping your backup in the cloud is a good and future-proof alternative to physical data storage, instead of an external hard drive or USB stick. An external hard drive or USB stick can be lost or damaged. The biggest advantage of storing files in the cloud is that they are available anytime, anywhere. In terms of security, you should always pay close attention to access and security with cloud backups.

External hard drive backups are still quite popular. Please note that you do not use a good backup method if you then keep the physical backup at home or on the same PC. Safe storage of an external hard drive is important.

Where you previously had freedom of choice regarding making a backup, and you could easily make multiple choices from the operating system on your computer. Now the PC operating systems are mainly promoting and integrating their own cloud services. However, there are still several options for making a backup. Before you go into business with a storage or backup service, you should only thoroughly familiarize yourself with the backup providers. This is partly due to the fact that you can no longer properly select these options from, for example, Windows itself.

It often goes wrong here! Did you know that a backup with, for example, iPhone does not store your photos and documents? 9 out of 10 times these images are stored in your iCloud and therefore not on backups. (1*) So is your iCloud account stolen or hacked? Then you can still lose everything. In addition, these backups pushed from operating systems are often stored in the cloud storage of expensive services, there are cheaper alternatives!

Backing up to a NAS is a good safe way to backup mainly for small businesses, Tech-Savvy PC users, and smart homes. NAS is an abbreviation for Network Attached Storage. A NAS Server is a kind of computer cabinet that can convert one or more hard drives into one wireless network storage via a wireless connection.

Secure Encrypted Backup SolutionsWhen you have sensitive data you need to back up consider using data-encrypted backup solutions. The Whitehouse recently said the following regarding using data encrypted backup solutions:

As much as parents plan ahead, there are times when back-up and short-notice care is required, such as the illness of your caregiver, stay-at-home spouse/partner or child, when your regular program or center is closed, when you're between caregiving arrangements or other times when you need to be at work and your regular care is not available. Harvard employees have access to back-up care options to assist you in those situations.

Harvard has contracted with Care.com for a suite of services. The Back-Up Care component provides back-up child and adult care. Benefits-eligible employees may use up to 20 days per fiscal year (July 1 through June 30) of all back-up care services combined. This benefit is intended to be used for back-up care purposes only and should not be used as a replacement for routine child care arrangements.

Imputed IncomePlease note that back-up care subsidy amounts in excess of $5,000 per year (including Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account contributions if any) are considered imputed income by the IRS and may be subject to taxes. There is a a flyer with more information.

How to get started with back-up care: Register before you need it! To use any service provided by Care.com, Harvard faculty and staff must first complete and return a waiver (Download, complete, and digitally-sign this form using your Adobe software - do not use the web-based version). You must submit this document by emailing it to the Univesity's Office of Work/Life (worklife@harvard.edu). Once the Office of Work/Life receives this waiver, the employee's name is added to an automatic filed feed that goes to Care.com. This initial process can take 24 hours, but once you are registered, you can make short-notice care requests over the phone, on-line or via Care.com's app. Get detailed registration information and learn about what Care.com offers.

Financial Assistance for Back-up CareEligible employees can be reimbursed up to $350 per year for back-up care you choose, including care provided by a friend, neighbor, relative, other in-home provider, or licensed child care center through the SOURCE program. Benefits-eligible employees with a full-time equivalent annual salary of less than $75,000 (FTE) are eligible.
